Summer has officially made its warm and sunny debut which means the next few months are destined to be filled with fun! Vacations, outside time, barbecues, and sporting events are just some of the fun things that come to mind. Whatever summer means to you, make sure that your kidney health doesn’t interfere with the fun!

Make sure you remember these kidney-friendly tips for pure summertime bliss!

Stay Hydrated

Summer is HOT which means you will be at an increased risk of dehydration. Water is important, especially in the warmer months, to remove waste from your body. Frequent dehydration can lead to permanent kidney damage as well as increase your risk of kidney stones. Be sure that you are hydrating throughout the day especially after exercise and outdoor time.

Indulge in Healthy Summer Foods

Summer is a perfect time to find fresh fruits and vegetables. Visit your local farmers market and indulge in some of these kidney-friendly foods: blackberries, blueberries, cherries, grapes, peaches, plums, raspberries, strawberries, carrots, cauliflower, cucumber, eggplant, green beans, and summer squash!

Plan Ahead for Travel

Summer is prime time for vacations! No matter where you are going, you should be able to enjoy your vacation without having to worry about the logistics of your dialysis treatment or kidney care. A few weeks before your trip, decide if you will be having treatments at another center or, if your machine allows, taking your treatment on the go. If you’ll be using a new center, make your appointments early. Be sure to have an updated list of your medications and important contacts readily available.
